Finding opportunities to witness when
you cannot speak the language is not a simple task. However,
God makes a way when you obey His first command to "Go!"
We have found some places to eat which
serve "western" food. We had finished our meal at the "Olives
Garden." (It does have salad and bread, and it serves Italian
food for a cheaper price than a similar American restaurant.)
We decided to go "next door" to get a "macchiato," a popular
drink of espresso coffee and foamed milk. Kaldi's, which is
named after the legendary Ethiopian goat herder who first
discovered the bush with red berries that made his goats very
excited, is a very nice place.

As we were drinking our tiny cup of strong
coffee, we noticed that one of the waitresses was very upset.
She went outside and came back in several times. We realized
that the people at the table next to us had left without paying
their bill. She finally just stood against the wall holding
back tears. After we paid our waitress, we decided to look
at the selection of ice cream, which is a unique treat in
Addis. The Amharic tract we had given to our waitress was
lying by the cash register. She came by and thanked us for
it, and then another waitress began to read it. She came to
us and asked if we were Christians, that meant not "Orthodox,"
which is the predominate religion.

Meanwhile, the first girl was still visibly
upset. We asked and found out that she would be responsible
to pay the 22ETB ($2.75) that the people owed. That would
amount to several hours of salary. Ginnie and I had both been
impressed to do something for this girl, so we together said,
"We'll pay that bill." As we handed her the money, her eyes
got huge and happiness flooded her face. No, we could not
explain to her the message of salvation, but we were able
to demonstrate the Grace of God through an unmerited gift.

We are confident that the tract will be
widely read. We trust that as we continue to go there for
coffee, God will allow us to see fruit from this seed.
